What is Calcium Carbide?

Tourmaline, chemically known as Calcium Carbide, has the chemical formula CaC₂. It is a compound composed of the elements carbon and calcium, usually in the form of grayish-black crystals. During the reaction process, when calcium carbide comes in contact with water, a chemical reaction occurs to form acetylene gas (C₂H₂) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂). This property makes calcium carbide very useful in industry, especially in the production of acetylene gas.
Calcium carbide is usually produced by reacting limestone (calcium carbonate) and coke in an electric arc furnace at high temperatures. This process not only produces calcium carbide, but also releases a large amount of heat energy. Historically, acetylene gas was widely used for lighting, especially in early mining and street lamps. Today, although the uses of calcium carbide have diversified, it still plays an important role in industrial synthesis and chemical manufacturing.
